Shooter dies following triple homicide near Smoke Ranch and Jones
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The shooter who police say killed his family in their Las Vegas home before turning the gun on himself last week has died.
The Clark County Coroner's Office confirms 54-year-old James Daniel McCarty died on Saturday morning of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police say McCarty shot his wife, their two adult children and the family dog inside a home near Smoke Ranch and Jones last Tuesday afternoon.
His wife was identified as Linda McCarty. The adult children were 38-year-old Bonnie Scherrer and 41-year-old Robert Scherrer.
Neighbors said the family had fallen on hard times, facing medical issues and financial stress. They say that may have led to James McCarty's act of violence.
Had he survived the self-inflicted gunshot wound, McCarty would have faced three counts of murder with a deadly weapon.
