Nevada Legislature convenes Monday with uncertainty
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- The 77th session of the Nevada Legislature begins Monday with pomp and ceremony before lawmakers buckle down to tackle politically charged issues that will set spending levels and policy priorities for years to come.
Opening day is reserved for welcomes, speeches and pledges of cooperation. Florists will be busy delivering bouquets.
Then the work begins and the clock starts ticking toward June 4, when, by law, the session must end. In the meantime, more than 900 bill drafts have been requested.
Taxes will be a big topic in the months ahead.
Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval has said he'll oppose new taxes, but Democrats pledge a discussion on Nevada's tax structure.
ruling by the Nevada Supreme Court keeping alive a tax initiative pushed the issue to the forefront.
