Drums containing chemicals found in Las Vegas desert
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Las Vegas Fire & Rescue responded to a reported hazardous situation in the desert Friday morning.
The call came in around 10 a.m. from north of Moccasin Road, on the far north end of the city.
A woman walking in the area noticed six, 55 gallon plastic drums lying on a road used by NV Energy. It appeared some were leaking.
As she got closer, she said there was an odor that caused a burning sensation in her nose. She then called 911.
When HazMat arrived, they found at least two of the drums were leaking and one was empty. They contained various chemicals, some of which were cleaning solutions.
It appeared the drums may have been illegally dumped in the desert.
It was determined the incident happened on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) property. They were notified and responded.
Las Vegas police were also notified of what happened.
The incident was in a remote area, far from any homes. No evacuations were made.
