Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A Boulder City family hugs each other close as they look at the memorial for a little boy who died Monday morning.

"It's hard as a mother to see this happen," neighbor Megan Adams said.

Adams daughter went to school with the 5-year-old boy named Max Walters.

"He was bright, he was a good boy -- very smart," Adams said.

Henderson police said the boy's father Hans Walters, a lieutenant with Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, shot his son and his wife Kathryn in the head. Walters then set their Boulder City home on fire and turned the gun on himself.

"I just want the family to know, I'm so sorry this happened," neighbor Judy Mayson said. She lives across from the charred home on Esther Street.

On Tuesday crime tape still surrounded the home and police finished their second day of investigations. Officers carried out evidence that might give them clues to a possible motive.

"I just hope they had some good friends that knew something was going on," Mayson said.

Neighbor remember the Walters as a quiet, but friendly family. Although neighbors didn't know them well, they're heartbroken over their death.

Walters served as a LVMPD officer for more than 20 years, his wife served the department for 13 years.
