Investigators release possible cause for January plane crash at NLV airport
North Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- According to investigators, a problem with the main landing gear was the cause of the crash by a Piper plane on Jan. 2 at the North Las Vegas Airport.
A preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board was released on Thursday.
The twin-engine Piper Aerostar veered off the runway at about 4:15 p.m. It came to rest in the airport infield and caught fire.
There were two people on the aircraft at the time of the crash -- a private pilot receiving instruction and a certified flight instructor.
Neither pilot was injured in the crash but the airplane sustained substantial damage from a post-crash fire.
The results of the preliminary report are subject to change after further investigation. It typically takes NTSB several months to come up with a final probable cause for accidents.
