Woman, child dead in murder-suicide involving police lieutenant
Boulder City, NV (KTNV) -- Three people are dead after a murder-suicide involving a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department lieutenant in Boulder City on Monday.
Police received a call from a home on Esther Drive in Boulder City at about 8:20 a.m. The man on the phone, later identified as a lieutenant with LVMPD, said he had killed his wife and son and was about to set his house on fire. He made threats against anyone who responded to the scene.
When authorities arrived at the home, the man was outside. He had what appeared to be a gun in his hand and did not comply with orders.
The man then went back inside the home and committed suicide. A SWAT unit entered the home and found a man, woman and child dead inside.
According to the Clark County Assessor's website, the home belongs to Lieutenant Hans Walters.
Police did not confirm the man's identity, but said he was a 52-year-old lieutenant and the home appeared to be the couple's private residence.
Sheriff Doug Gillespie also said that the officer had 20 years of experience with the department.
Walters was a supervisor in LVMPD's Enterprise Area Command, which serves the southwest valley.
It's not clear what the motive for the crime was. Police said the wife killed was 46 years old. She and the child killed have not yet been identified.
Clark County Coroner Michael Murphy says the names of the deceased will be released Tuesday.
Boulder City Police were first to respond to the scene. The Henderson Police Department is taking the lead on the investigation.
