Las Vegas woman loses battle with Acromegaly
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The Las Vegas woman, who became known for her battle against Acromegaly, has passed away.
According to her website, Tanya Angus passed away at 12:25 a.m. Jan. 14 due to heart problems.
Tanya celebrated her 34th birthday in November -- a birthday that her doctors said that she would never reach.
Angus was nearly 7 feet tall and weighed 400 pounds. She was diagnosed with Acromegaly about 10 years ago.
Acromegaly is a syndrome that results when the anterior pituitary gland produces an excess of growth hormone.
Last year, doctors told Tanya she had finally stopped growing. Family and doctors were hopeful at that time that Tanya would survive for several more years.
During her struggle with the condition, Tanya underwent three brain surgeries, radiation and several experimental medications.
Tanya remained a face of the rare disease throughout the years. She spoke at conferences, met with others suffering similar conditions and helped raise awareness.
"Part of Tanya's legacy is her good work in spreading the word about education and early detection of the pituitary tumor Acromegaly," her grandmother posted on Tanya's website. "Tanya's heart's desire to spread that word will continue here."
