Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Friends and family said a final goodbye to Yamel Moreno,  the man struck and killed by a car, while crossing Tropicana near Decatur.

The accident on Jan. 4th, marked the first traffic-related death of 2013 in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's jurisdiction.

Investigators say Moreno, 35, was walking home around 11:30 p.m., when he crossed outside of a marked crosswalk. He was hit by a white Lexus. The coroner's office said Moreno died of blunt force trauma to the chest.

"His daughter, Zahara, was born six months ago," said Juan Cortez, a close friend of Moreno. "Now, she will never know her father. He had just told me that this was going to be his year. He was taken too soon. His family is looking for answers."

Yamel's funeral is Monday morning. His family hopes his senseless and preventable death serves as a wake-up call for others.
