Several drunk drivers caught at DUI checkpoint
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Several drunk drivers were taken off the road in handcuffs Saturday night, at the Valley's most recent DUI checkpoint.
It was an unplanned stop for drivers crossing the intersection of Sahara and Decatur, who encountered officers asking one simple question.
"They asked me if I had had a few drinks, and I didn’t lie," said driver Kristen Bell. "I told them I had a beer about an hour ago."
Like dozens of others Bell was asked to pull her car over and complete a field sobriety test. Bell passed and continued on home, but police say they see so many others who drive intoxicated. It’s not just people drinking; officers are seeing a sharp increase in the amount of people driving while on prescription medication.
"Huge increase in that category," said Lt. Rich Fletcher with Metro’s Traffic Detail. "They think because it's prescribed by a doctor, its okay. But, it's not.”
Police had arrested 7 people by 11 p.m. Saturday night; they planned to stay at the intersection until 3 a.m. Sunday.
