Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- In the wake of the massacre in Newtown, Conn., a national debate has grown about gun control.

Local gun owners and gun range goers have mixed feelings towards the idea of banning assault style weapons.

"I don't think that's a good idea," said Mario DelMuro, who said it's everyone's right to own guns.

"It's the gun control bit that's easy to blame," expressed John Thalgott, who shoots for sport. He said he's indifferent to a ban on assault weapons.

A lot of gun owners told Action News they think the discussion should also, or perhaps largely, focus on mental health issues instead of gun control.

This week, President Barack Obama formed a committee to figure out if something can be done to curb gun violence.

Meanwhile, leaders for the National Rifle Association said school security could improve by adding guns; suggesting an armed officer be placed at every school in America.
