Teen arrested with assault rifle on school campus
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A teen was arrested on campus at a Clark County School with an assault rifle in his car on Friday.
Police said the 18-year-old former student was arrested on campus at Northwest Career and Technical Academy with an unloaded weapon in the back seat of his car. Ammunition was also found inside the vehicle.
A parent on campus alerted school police after spotting the gun. School police then alerted Metro officers, who assisted in making the arrest.
Authorities said there was never any threat to anyone on campus, but they do not know what the teen's intentions were. The teen told police he was there visiting a friend.
"The individual did have rounds in the car, several small knives and a few other things in his vehicle," said Captain Ken Young with CCSD police. "There was no threat. There was no altercation. He cooperated fully with the officers once they made contact with him."
The teen, identified as Jake Howell, was arrested for possession of a weapon on school property. He was booked at the Clark County Detention Center.
Authorities credit the alertness of the parent who spotted the gun.
"We are very grateful to the parent who took the extra step to make contact with an officer," said Captain Young.
