Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A baby and a woman were both critically injured in a crash on Interstate 15 near Blue Diamond Road on Monday.

The crash happened at about 1:45 p.m. in the southbound lanes, just north of the Blue Diamond exit.

Three cars were involved in the accident, two much more severly impacted than the other.

The woman and baby were both airlifted to University Medical Center.

Three other adults in an SUV involved in the collision were also hospitalized. Their injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

Authorities shut down the highway for hours to investigate the scene.

"Unfortunately at this time we don't know what caused the accident," Trooper Jeremie Elliot said at the scene. "We're working on that. This is a common area for congestion, so it may have just been that, but we're currently working on the reasons why."

All lanes were reopened by 5 p.m. on Monday.
