CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- Authorities say they were searching for any lingering dynamite in the walls of a Carson City home after a man who hadn't lived there for decades told them he'd stored it there years ago.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong told the Reno Gazette-Journal that the area was safe, even though authorities evacuated nearby homes Tuesday.

Furlong says a man told the sheriff's office Tuesday that he had access to dynamite decades ago and had stored it in the walls.

Furlong told the Nevada Appeal that responders prying off plywood in the garage found three sticks of dynamite estimated to be up to 40 or 50 years old.

The sheriff says it's not clear why it took the man so long to report the explosives.

The home is currently vacant.
