Henderson, NV (KTNV) -- After years of planning, owners and designers broke ground Tuesday on a new water park in Henderson.
Cowabunga Bay Las Vegas will cover 23 acres off Galleria Drive and feature more than 30 waterslides, according to plans. The project is expected to cost around $23 million.
"We're investing a lot of money in this project and we hope to see a good return," said project partner Shane Huish.
The last water park in the Las Vegas area closed about eight years ago, Huish said.
Plans for Cowabunga Bay call for a family friendly park featuring food and attractions. Huish said construction is expected to create several hundred jobs and the facility will likely create another 500 seasonal positions.
"It's a great place to have people come apply," said Gerri Schroder, Henderson councilwoman. "Whether you're an adult or a teen, there are plenty of jobs here for people which will help our economy."
The Henderson project is separate from Wet 'n' Wild, a $50 million project under construction in southwest Las Vegas. Construction on that facility is moving forward, said Nancy Katz, project spokeswoman.
"I think we'll each provide unique experiences and I think both of us will have a lot of success," said Huish.
Both facilities hope to open by the upcoming summer.
