Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A proposed tax hike to raise money for education in Nevada crossed a hurdle Wednesday.

The Nevada State Education Association turned in its petitions for the "education initiative."

Under the proposal, new school revenue could be generated by a two percent marginal tax on businesses that make more than $1 million.

The proposal is scheduled to go to the state legislature but if lawmakers don't act within the first 40 days of the session, the measure will go to the voters.
