Volunteers help Valley woman fight high repair bill
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) - Sometimes fixing something in your house isn't as expensive as trying to find out what the problem actually is. When one Valley woman found the source of what was spiking her water bill, the company wouldn't pay up. So she called Contact 13's Call for Action volunteers.
"My bills were usually around $10 - $12 a month and then I received a bill for $36," said Ruth Mangano.
Ruth has lived in her house for 44 years. So when she received a slightly higher water bill, she knew something wasn't right. The Las Vegas Valley Water District came out and couldn't find a leak on their end. So Ruth hired a company that specializes in leak detectives and sure enough a leak was found.
"He came out and within five minutes he found the leak," said Ruth.
Water was coming out of Ruth's water softener system. So she paid the man $225 and got back on the phone to call the water softener company.
"They came out and fixed it immediately, but they didn't want to know anything about my $225," said Ruth.
Ruth felt the water softener company should pay what it cost her to hire the company to find the leak. But when Ruth called to ask for that she didn't get the answer she was expecting.
"They said they would call me back but nobody ever called me back," said Ruth.
So Ruth picked up the phone again, this time dialing 702 - 368 - 2255 our Call for Action hotline. One of our volunteers made a call to the water softener company and got through.
The company will pay half of it and they picked up my water bills so I'm satisfied," said Ruth.
Ruth's habit of vigilantly looking at her bills paid off and so did her call to our volunteers.
"Channel 13 to me is the greatest," said Ruth.
So here is the Contact 13 bottom line. Sometimes all you have to do is ask. Ruth would have never known the company would pay some of the cost to try and find the problem unless she called us. So while your paperwork may outline some important stipulations you never know what else they will cover unless you ask. If you're frustrated with a company and have no where else to turn, give our Call for Action volunteers a call at 702 - 368 - 2255. They're there Monday through Friday 11am to 1pm.
