Guns N' Roses advertisement comes under fire
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Hanging on the Hard Rock Hotel, an ad for the Guns N' Roses rock concert shows a woman with her clothes ripped and her legs spread, some said it looks like rape.
"It's guns and roses, that's who they are," Las Vegas local, Barbara Clemmer, said. "That's what I expect."
But the ad was totally unexpected for Clark County Commissioners and women advocates.
"We have an obligation and responsibility to step up and speak out against things that will leave a negative effect on our community," Commissioner Lawrence Weekly said.
Violence against women is a growing problem in Las Vegas, according to commissioners. Metro police responded to more than 50,000 calls for domestic violence in 2011. The Rape Crisis Center said rape is on the rise.
"We are trying to evolve and we are trying to empower women to help them heal," Hannah Brook, Rape Crisis Center Director, said. "This type of advertising doesn't help."
There is a history behind the ad, it's the original cover art for the band's 1987 album "Appetite for Destruction" and it was so controversial back then that ti was removed from store shelves. "We have to not push the envelope so much that it's all about a dollar bill," Weekly said. "It should be about respect and morality in some cases as well." Tourist Juan Aparacio who is staying at the Hard Rock said the ad is all over, even on his key card. "All the staff in the hotel have t-shirts with this ad and I didn't notice she was being raped," Aparacio said. For now the ad will stay, commissioners said it could be a legal battle to have it taken down. There are several versions of the ad, some are even more explicit and other versions have been modified. Action News reached out to the company handling the Guns N' Roses show and it has no comment on the ad.
