Accord reached on Clark County grant application
LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Gov. Brian Sandoval has helped broker an accord between Clark County school officials and the teachers union to allow the district's Race to the Top grant application to be submitted.
The Republican governor announced the agreement Friday. Sandoval had met with both sides late Thursday night, urging compromise to ensure the $40 million grant application could be filed by Friday's deadline.
The Clark County Education Association, at odds with the district for two years over teacher salaries and benefits, had refused to sign off on the district's federal grant application. Union acceptance of the application is required.
District officials say if approved, the grant will allow the hiring of 22 teachers and 24 support staff to provide technology and literacy programs at poorer schools, benefiting 41,000 students.
