Long road to recovery for teen victim of bus stop accident
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- With a smile on his face Shawn Wang's mother asked him how he's doing.
"Good," he muttered, considering the 19-year-old has been in rehab for the past two weeks. He's one of the survivors of a deadly bus stop accident that killed four people.
Wang was badly injured and suffered a stroke that wiped out most of his memory. His mother, Lilly Jiang, said he doesn't remember anything about the September accident.
Jiang speaks for her son, translating Chinese. Wang also doesn't remember the English he was learning in school - that's where he was going the morning he was hit.
"His teacher called me and she said major accident at bus stop," Jiang said in broken English. "Go to emergency at UMC."
Wang spent weeks at UMC before being transferred to Health South, a rehabilitation facility where he is learning to walk again.
Health South staff expect Wang to be released on Monday. He will continue treatments at an outpatient facility.
"He's been great, he wants to get better and he works for it," lead physical therapist, Pamela Smith, said. "He has a supportive family and that helps a lot."
Wang doesn't have health insurance so the facility is proving treatment pro-bono. When he leaves, Wang will have a long road to recovery."
"He needs continued outpatient treatment he needs medications and all of that type of stuff," case manager Stephen Besefske said.
Wang's therapist said it's too early to tell if he will make a full recovery. He doesn't have any movement in his right arm.
