NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) -- A man who allegedly tried to break into two homes in North Las Vegas is recovering from being shot.

Police say they got a call about 9 a.m. Thursday from a woman reporting a home invasion. She told officers someone had kicked in her front door while she and her two small children were upstairs, but then fled the scene.

Authorities say there was evidence at the scene that the burglar was injured.

Police say 34-year-old Shunta Hilliard arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound about two hours later.

Investigators say they believe Hilliard tried to break into another home earlier before he was shot by a 66-year-old homeowner. They believe he then forced his way into the second house.

Police say the first shooting wasn't reported to officers.
