Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A newborn kitten cries out, hungry and in pain. The last few hours have been a fight for life.

"These are newborns coming into this world and they are innocent," Lisa Mauro, the veterinarian at Haven Animal Hospital, said. "Their three hours of life are met with being tortured."

Mauro and her staff are trying to save the kittens. She said, teenagers at an apartment complex threw rocks at the litter as the mother cat was giving birth.

"The mother was trying to grab the kittens and run," Mauro said. "She was trying to save them desperately and she couldn't."

Animal control confirms it's investigating a case of animal cruelty at an apartment complex on Russell Road and Ft. Apache.

Mauro said, out of a litter of six kittens only two babies survived.

"These guys are still moving," Mauro said as she held a kitten. "This one we can't see any wounds so I think this one has gotten pretty lucky."

Mauro's staff is feeding the kittens with artificial milk and keeping them warm with heating blankets.

"We got them started on some warm heating blankets," Patrick Harp, veterinary technician, said. "We are trying to get their temperature back up because they were ice cold when they came in."

For these kittens to survive, Mauro said they need a mother's milk.
