Man to spend time behind bars for attempting to rob Bellagio
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A California man will spend two to five years behind bars for attempting to rob the Bellagio.
"I'm sorry about what I did. Poor judgment, stupid on my part," said 25-year-old Michael Belton Wednesday morning, as he faced a judge for his sentencing.
This summer, he pled guilty to charges of robbery and conspiracy, after a botched attempt to steal $100,000 in casino chips from the Bellagio.
Belton's defense attorney said he was out of work at the time, and took part in the crime out of desperation.
According to Belton, it was another man who planned the crime and pepper-sprayed the dealer at the blackjack table they attempted to rob. He got away, but Belton was captured.
The judge gave him the minimum sentence for his role, but he faces several years in prison.
Belton has cooperated with authorities since the beginning, but the other people involved in the attempted robbery have still not been caught.
