Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and members of the community remembered nearly 20 fallen victims of relationship abuse during a ceremony Monday.
It was a bittersweet event for friends and family who have lost a loved one in the last year to domestic violence.
The ceremony at LVMPD headquarters honored 2011 domestic abuse victims. Their names were added to a plaque.
Fresh roses at the ceremony also helped honor the causalities.
One man at the ceremony -- John Carson -- said that he would dedicate the rest of his life to trying to erase the problem of domestic violence.
His daughter was murdered two years ago.
In 2011, there were 13 less victims that the previous year.
The new plaque will join two others. In all, the plaques contain 280 names of victims who have lost their lives to domestic violence in the past 12 years.
Anyone who may be a victim of domestic violence can call the statewide hotline number -- 1-800-500-1556.
