Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- For the first time in Southern Nevada history, new regulations have been placed on trappers, restricting them from placing certain traps too close to hiking trails on Mount Charleston.

It started after a few pet owners found their dogs, with their legs caught in a trap.

After petitioning the trapping regulation committee, a new ordinance was put in place preventing these types of leg hold traps from being used within 1000 feet of the designated trails, and a 1/2 mile from residential areas.

“People come out, they go hiking. Their dog gets caught in a trap. They don’t understand how to release the dog from the trap,” said Tom Padden of the Trapping Regulation Committee.

The ordinance does not affect cage or box style traps, which are still allowed to be used anywhere.

The Nevada Trappers Association who said they were happy to have reached a compromise on this issue.
