Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- It is International Walk to School Day.

Volunteers will walk to school with students from ten schools around the Las Vegas valley and teach them how to identify unsafe intersections, streets needing sidewalks, and dangerous areas where pedestrians have either been hit or nearly injured by a motor vehicle.

Ten thousand students are expected to participate in today's event.

Although the number of children injured in traffic crashes has gone down in the United States, the National Center for Health Statistics say such injuries are still the leading cause of death among children ages 3 to 14.

More than 61 children are injured every day and more than 500 children are killed each year.

Drivers are advised that there will be more kids walking or biking to school today.

The event is being sponsored by Safe Kids Clark County and Sunrise Children's Hospital.

Safe Kids Clark County is a member of Safe Kids Worldwide, a global network of organizations dedicated to preventing unintentional injury.
