Reno public hearing on "essential" health benefits
RENO, Nev. (AP) -- Nevada Division of Insurance officials are seeking public input before deciding minimum benefit coverage for health insurance policies issued in the state.
Under the federal Affordable Care Act, most private and self-insured insurance policies must include certain "essential" benefits, such as maternity, emergency room care and hospitalization.
But the scope of benefits in each category can vary widely -- and can add to the cost of insurance premiums.
For example, one insurer may offer 60 visits per year for physical therapy, while another may only offer 20.
The insurance division has been holding meetings around the state to get public comment before setting minimum benefit requirements.
The next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno.
