Grant funds new K-9 for Washoe County jail
RENO, Nev. (AP) -- A donation from a Reno foundation is sending another dog to jail.
Officials say a new K-9 will be assigned to sniff out contraband at the Washoe County Sheriff's Detention Facility.
The dog and its training are being funded by a grant of more than $25,000 from the Helen Close Charitable Foundation. Washoe County commissioners accepted the gift earlier this week.
Washoe County Sheriff Sgt. Anthony Miceli says dogs at the jail help detect narcotics or explosives, and also conduct perimeter checks and help guards control inmates that get combative.
Officials say this will mark the second grant-funded K-9 assigned to the jail since 2010. The dogs also have the training and skills to serve patrol units on the field when needed.
