Vegas physician settles federal overbilling case
LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Federal prosecutors say the physician-owner of a Las Vegas radiation oncology center has agreed to pay $486,000 to settle Justice Department allegations that he improperly overbilled federal health care insurance programs for more than four years.
U.S. Attorney Daniel Bogden announced Monday that the settlement requires Cancer Care Center owner Dr. Navneet Sharda to pay to the money to the federal government.
Sharda was accused of "unbundling" billings for major procedures from January 2006 through March 2010 and charging Medicare, TRICARE and the Federal Employees Health Benefits more money for smaller procedures.
The out-of-court civil settlement, effective Sept. 17, did not involve a lawsuit.
It included no admission of liability by Sharda.
Sharda's attorney in the case, Harold Gewerter, didn't immediately respond to a message.
