Funeral services held for woman who survived machete attack
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Funeral services were held Tuesday for the woman who survived a machete attack only to be struck down by cancer.
Maria Gomez was an inspiration to her family and friends as she fought the fight of her life.
Those family and friends gathered yesterday at Palm Mortuary in downtown Las Vegas to remember Gomez and celebrate her life.
Gomez lost her battle to uterine cancer last week.
Gomez survived a vicious machete attack that left her without the use of her hands. And, despite the toll that cancer took on her, she was an outspoken advocate for women dealing with domestic violence.
Gomez was allegedly attacked by her ex-boyfriend Armando Vergara-Martinez. He is scheduled to go to trial for the attack in October. He has pled not guilty to attempted murder.
Gomez was 53 when she died.
