Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Some of the best athletes in the world were in the Valley for one of the most challenging competitions.

"It's hilly, it's hot, there are a lot of things to contend with, so truly the athletes who are here are mentally and physically tested. We're seeing what they're made of," said Jessica Weidensall, Global PR for Ironman.

The 2012 Ironman Championships were held this weekend throughout Las Vegas and Henderson.

Around 1,700 athletes qualified for the race.

The race includes a more than one-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride and a 13 mile run. All together, it's more than 70 miles.

Professional athletes complete the course in about four hours.

The winner gets a prize of $200,000.
