BLM plans emergency horse gather in Nevada
ELY, Nev. (AP) -- The Bureau of Land Management says it will begin an emergency roundup of wild horses in south-central Nevada because of the ongoing drought.
The agency on Thursday said 100 to 125 horses will be removed from a section of the Pancake Herd Management Area, located 30 mile west of Ely and 80 miles northeast of Tonopah.
Helicopters will be used to gather the horses. The roundup is slated to begin Wednesday.
BLM officials say horses in the area are moderately thin to very thin because of poor range conditions, and that their condition will worsen beyond recovery if emergency action isn't taken.
