Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has suspended the D.A.R.E. program due to budget cuts.

"The D.A.R.E. program was suspended in order to place those officers back on the street," the department said in a release on Tuesday.

Metro also reassigned a squad from the department's saturation team back to patrol.

"Right now there is an immediate need for more officers on patrol," Sheriff Doug Gillespie said. "Community involvement and crime prevention are key factors in our success. While this is a short-term solution to fill an immediate need, we will work with our commissioners and city council members to come up with a long-term solution."
