Las Vegas drivers urged to be cautious on first day of school
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- It is the first day of school in the Las Vegas Valley and hundreds of students will be walking to school.
That means that drivers need to be extra careful on the roads.
Police officers in Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and Henderson will all be out and about.
A traffic safety grant from the Nevada Department of Public Safety is helping provide extra officers in North Las Vegas.
Police officers will be on the lookout for drivers who may have gotten out of the habit of looking for kids on the roads during the summer months. So, officers will be reminding drivers that pedestrians have the right of way and they can not pass other vehicles that are stopped for pedestrians.
They will also be making sure that students and other pedestrians use the crosswalks when they are trying to cross a street.
North Las Vegas police will be at several high-traffic areas throughout the city today, keeping and eye on kids going to and from school.
