Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The family of William Mootz is thankful for the hundreds of volunteers who came out to help find the missing teen.
The search for William ended in tragedy on Friday morning when the 17-year-old's body was found in a wetland area near Sam Boyd Stadium.
"We had over 600 people come out here and help in the last two days," William's father, Charlie said. "Unfortunately it didn't turn out the way any of us wanted it to."
William's father spearheaded the volunteer efforts to find his son after he disappeared in the Pittman Wash on Wednesday.
"Unfortunately, the group that found him were friends," Charlie said. "Close friends and family, kids who grew up with him. "
The Mootz family said the hundreds of volunteers included sports teams, student council members, Boy Scouts and complete strangers.
"The community's been amazing and we couldn't appreciate it more," William's sister said. "Thank you all, so much."
After sharing their gratitude, the Mootz family went home to grieve.
A vigil is planned at Green Valley High School on Saturday at 8 p.m. Donations can be made in William Mootz's name at any Nevada State Bank location.
