5-year-old girl shoots father in the arm
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A child shot her father in the arm on Thursday morning, prompting police to launch an investigation into why the young girl had access to a gun.
Police were called to the scene of a shooting at about 8:15 a.m. involving a 5-year-old girl in the 100 block of Castle Course Avenue, near Fort Apache Road and Blue Diamond.
Authorities say that the little girl was sleeping with her parents when she woke up and found an unsecured gun in the bedroom.
The child then accidentally shot her father in the arm. She may have been trying to put the gun away when it discharged.
The father was transported to University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
The child is now in the official custody of Child Protective Services.
According to the police, there are multiple firearms in the home. It is possible that charges may be filed against the parents.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is still investigating the incident.
