Whittemore's US suit in Reno on hold
RENO, Nev. (AP) -- A U.S. district judge has ruled against Nevada lobbyist Harvey Whittemore in his bid to sue his former business partners in federal court in Reno for $60 million while a similar case moves forward in state court in Las Vegas.
Judge Larry Hicks granted a request by lawyers for the Seeno family of Northern California on Wednesday to stay the federal proceeding. The Seenos, who filed the original lawsuit in Clark County, had accused Whittemore of "forum shopping" for a more favorable judge.
Hicks said Wednesday he didn't necessarily buy that argument, but that he felt the two cases were substantially similar and would be a waste of court resources to continue parralel paths.
He stopped short of dismissing the federal case so he can make sure there are no problems in the state proceedings.
