Woman pleads guilty in AFB breast implant scam
LAS VEGAS (AP) -- A 31-year-old Las Vegas woman accused of running a $17,000 breast implant scam at an Air Force base hospital has pleaded guilty.
Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto announced Shanita Flax pleaded guilty this week to two counts of felony theft. She faces up to 10 years in prison for both counts.
Masto says Flax worked as a civilian contractor in Nellis Air Force Base's hospital from 2008 to September 2010, and was responsible for discussing pricing with breast implant candidates.
Government insurance covers the cost of reconstructive surgery for women who've had breast cancer or an occupational injury, but doesn't cover purely cosmetic implants.
Flax is accused of taking cash from cosmetic patients but ordering the implants as if they were for cancer payments, then pocketing the money.
