Man gets life for killing brother in Nevada
RENO, Nev. (AP) -- A 48-year-old Mogul man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing his brother after an argument over a cellphone escalated.
Robert Davis must serve 22 years before he becomes eligible for parole under the sentence handed down Wednesday by Washoe District Judge Scott Freeman. He was convicted by a jury in June of first-degree murder.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reports family members called the killing in September a tragedy. They said the victim, 43-year-old Matthew Davis, suffered from mental illness and did not take his medications.
Defense lawyers told jurors that Robert Davis was afraid of his younger brother and was protecting himself when his shotgun fired.
But authorities said he was furious that his brother slapped him and stole his phone.
