Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Police say DNA evidence pointed them to a man responsible for two cold case murders in Las Vegas.

65-year-old Nathan Burkett is behind bars in Clark County, charged with killing Barbara Ann Cox in 1978 and Tina Gayle Mitchell in 1994.

Both slayings happened blocks apart from eachother in Las Vegas.

Cox's body was found in an apartment complex on West Bonanza Road where Burkett also lived.

Mitchell's body was found behind an apartment complex on H Street, about a half mile away.

Police say recently-returned DNA evidence helped them nab Burkett for the crimes.

Burkett has an extensive criminal record and served time after being convicted of voluntary manslaughter after another woman's body was found in an alcove near F Street in Las Vegas. He served about 72 months of a 115-month sentence and eventually moved to Mississippi.

Police are now looking into the possibility that Burkett may be connected to multiple other crimes in the Las Vegas area.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.
