Yerington, NV (KTNV) -- 18 emaciated horses have been seized from a group that was supposed to be helping the animals.
The animals were found underweight, with their ribs and hip bones sticking out.
The horses came from a place called "Frontier Ranch" in Yerington. It's supposed to be a rescue group, but the owners are now being cited for animal cruelty.
A woman named Laura Smith is listed as the secretary of the ranch. She faces up to $21,000 in fines for animal cruelty.
So far, Smith is not commenting.
The county will keep custody of the horses until the case is settled.
Local farmers have donated hay to feed them.
