Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- We are about a month away from the start of the new school year and that means it is time to take the kids to get those important vaccinations.

Pertussis or whooping cough is on the rise in Southern Nevada according to the Southern Nevada Health District and that is why health officials are asking parents to update their kids' pertussis vaccinations when bringing them in for their back-to-school shots.

The health district has seen 22 cases of pertussis here since January. That is an increase compared to last year.

Seven of those cases have occurred in babies under the age of one.

Children attending school must be immunized against pertussis once before starting kindergarten and then again before entering the seventh grade.

Proof that your children received the required vaccinations is required before starting school.

Information on where you can take your children for there shots can be found by clicking here.
