HELP of Southern Nevada holds annual school supply drive
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) - The new school year is right around the corner, and it can be a tough time for those that are struggling in the valley. A lot of local families can't afford basic supplies like pencils and paper for back to school. That's why HELP of Southern Nevada is holding a School Supply Drive.
"Paper, rulers, calculators, some of those scientific calculators can be so expensive now," said HELP of Southern Nevada Community Outreach Coordinator Abby Quinn.
"When you're dealing with a family that has three or four children, it becomes a huge cost for back to school. Let alone the clothing that they need to buy for the new year," she said.
HELP of Southern Nevada has started their annual School Supplies Drive to equip students in the valley with the tools they need to thrive in school
"You need to set these children up to learn and the only way to do that is to give them the supplies and the confidence they need," said Quinn.
"I feel like we are really able to step in and help them with that when their parents are concerned about getting rent paid and keeping the utilities on. There's a lot of stress on parents right now and that's kind of at the bottom, but it's something that's very important," she said.
HELP is looking for anything and everything a child needs for school. Pencils, markers, glue sticks, backpacks and calculators. And if you're out shopping for your own child, grab a few extra pens or a notepad to donate.
If you're not going to the store HELP suggests making a cash donation online.
"We use coupons, we use deals that we find, and we can really fill a backpack for about $35 dollars," said Quinn
It's a simple way to make a child's day or maybe even their entire school year.
To make a cash donation go to www.helpsonv.org. Make sure to type in "school supplies" on the donation page to make sure your money is going to this event.
HELP IS collecting supplies at it's headquarters at 1640 E. Flamingo Road. It will happen every week, Monday through Thursday, until September 13th.
