ELKO, Nev. (AP) -- Elko County sheriff's deputies say a man in his 20s drowned in northeast Nevada's South Fork Reservoir near the South Fork dam.

The victim's name has not been released.

Elko County Undersheriff Clair Morris says he swam 150 to 175 yards from shore toward a juvenile in an inner tube before he went under about 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Morris says the youth did everything he could to try to pull the man out of the water but lost his grip.

Nevada State Parks officials mounted a rescue effort in a boat and a search helicopter was called in but with no success.

Deputies say recovery efforts have been hampered by heavy seaweed.
