1 chimp dead, 1 chimp captured after escaping in Las Vegas neighborhood
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- One chimpanzee is dead and another is back in captivity after the animals escaped in a Las Vegas neighborhood on Thursday morning.
The chimpanzees were reported to police at about 10:15 a.m. The chimpanzees were loose in the area of West Ann Road and North Jones Boulevard.
Police warned residents and motorists to stay inside of their homes and their cars and they closed Ann Road between Jones and Bradley.
The first chimpanzee was shot about an hour later. Shortly after, authorities confirmed that chip was dead.
The chimpanzee that was shot was a male and was about 5-feet, 5-inches tall and weighed about 200 pounds. Neighbors said that his name was Buddy.
A short time later, the other chimpanzee -- a female -- was tranquilized. The name of the female chimp is C.J., according to people in the neighborhood.
The female chimpanzee was returned to its enclosure.
The identity of the chimpanzees' owner has not been released and it is not clear how the animals escaped.
