Should McCarran Airport change its name?
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- McCarran International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the country but do people automatically associate the name with the city of Las Vegas?
That was the question that came up yesterday at a board meeting of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
Las Vegas councilman Steve Ross brought up the idea of changing the airport's name at last month's board meeting too.
VOTE: Do you think McCarran should change its name?
McCarran was named after former Sen. Pat McCarran and it has been the name of the airport for more than 60 years.
But, Councilman Ross is worried that people who do not live in this state don't recognize the name. So, he is suggesting something more obvious like Las Vegas International Airport or Las Vegas-McCarran.
VOTE: What name do you like?
Other LVCVA board members decided the issue is worth a full debate and it is being put on the agenda for the next meeting in August.
Even if the LVCVA approves the idea, it will only be a recommendation. The Clark County Board of Commissioners has authority over the airport and they would ultimately be the ones to decide on a name change.
