Woman devastated after losing husband, son in presumed drowning
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A local woman is overcome with devastation after losing both her husband and young son in a presumed drowning at Lake Mohave over the weekend.
Abelinda Espejel shared her story with Action News on Monday.
The family is still trying to piece together exactly what happened at the lake on Sunday.
Espejel said her husband took her son down by the water. A short time later, she saw emergency responders near the shore as a crowd gathered around their unconscious bodies.
"I wanted to run and hug them, but they wouldn't let me," she said. " i knew they were already dead, but they wouldn't let me get nearby, even to my little boy."
It was just after 11 a.m. on Sunday that the father and son were spotted floating about 25 yards off the shoreline at Six Mile Cove, not wearing flotation devices.
Abelinda said her husband, 37-year-old Pablo Hernandez, liked to go to the lake, although he did not know how to swim.
Hernandez did all kinds of odd jobs to support Abelinda so she could stay at home with their two autistic children, including Angel, the toddler who died with his father at the lake.
Abelinda is looking for any financial support she can get. She said without Pablo, she doesn't know how she will support her remaining children.
The Clark County Coroner's Office is working to determine if drowning was the actual cause of death.
