Dozens search for jobs as unemployment benefits expire
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- More than 5,000 Nevadans are just hours away from losing their extended unemployment benefits, leaving many desperate to find work immediately.
Those benefits are extended to states with high unemployment numbers. Because Nevada’s overall unemployment rate has dropped to below 12 percent, our state has lost that federal funding. It’s a harsh reality that has sent people to Nevada Job Connect, the state's leading resource for putting people back to work.
People like Theresa Fray who spent 11 years working at a restaurant eventually becoming the general manager, before losing her job.
“Well, I'm hoping, I'm hoping, because I need to carry on,” said Theresa Fray. “My husband just passed, I'm alone, I need something to get me through.”
Fray said she never wanted to be in a position where she would need to accept government assistance.
“It's a personal thing, if you want to work, you're going to work, and that's why I am here," Fray said. "I want to work.”
