Discovery of emaciated horses prompts owner's arrest
Mohave County, AZ (KTNV) -- A woman was arrested in Mohave County after several horses on her property were discovered to be severely underweight and emaciated.
62-year-old Andrea Zindel Smith was arrested on Monday afternoon on five counts of failure to provide medical treatment for animals.
The Mohave County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation after receiving complaints about horses in the 3200 block of Old West Drive in need of food, water and medical care.
Mohave County deputies, animal control and an officer with Arizona Department of Livestock first visited the home of Smith on June 18. Upon arrival, four adult horses and one young horse were observed to be in poor health.
Smith was advised to have the horses seen by a veterinarian within a week.
On June 25, a return visit was made to Smith's residence to check on the horses. Although she told officers that she had made an appointment with a veterinarian in Kingman, a phone call to that vet said Smith did not have any appointments.
Smith was placed under arrest.
The investigation is on-going and may result in additional charges.
