Coroner rules Furnace Gulch death a suicide

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The Clark County coroner has identified the man that killed himself during a standoff with Las Vegas police on June 23 as 74-year-old William Thornton of Las Vegas.

The cause of death was a gunshot. The death has been ruled a suicide.

Police were called after Thornton barricaded himself inside of his home on Furnace Gulch Avenue with a gun and his wife.

The man allegedly fired one round at his wife and then shot himself.

His wife called 911.

It took Las Vegas police several hours to clear the scene.

It is not known why Thornton shot himself.
