Las Vegas, NV (\KTNV) -- A new X-Men comic book is being released today and a local comic book store is celebrating with a party.
The new comic book features the first gay wedding in the history of comic books. In "Astonishing X-Men #51," Northstar will marry his longtime-partner Kyle.
Marvel Comics Universe revealed that Northstar, a Canadian superhero associated with the X-Men, was gay back in 1992.
The character now lives in New York state and since gay marriage is now legal in that state, Marvel says they wanted to reflect what would happen to these characters in the real world.
Just last week, DC Comics announced that the original Green Lantern was being re-invented as a gay character.
These new story lines are somewhat controversial among fans. But, the owner of Maximum Comics here in Las Vegas is gay and is supporting the developments.
Maximum Comics will host a wedding reception today at both locations.
The receptions will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. at 520 S. Marks Street in Henderson and at 5130 S. Fort Apache.
The store employees will be dresses in tuxedos and there will be flowers and cake.
Proceeds from the event will benefit Aids for AIDS of Nevada.
